Video Game Classics Getting a Facelift
As the interest in this week’s release of Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary Edition shows, remakes of classic video games are all the rage. Developers are dusting off canvasses and applying a fresh layer of high definition paint to the hits of yesteryear.
Halo is not the end of it. There are plenty more remasters on the way to whet your appetite, including Final Fantasy X, Devil May Cry, Zone of the Enders and the Oddworld collection.
There are various ways to remaster an old video game, and some coders do a better job than others. Older games from the days of the PSOne and before, are generally a tall order to improve. The pre-rendered backgrounds would need an entire overhaul, which effectively means recreating the game from scratch.

Call of Duty Enjoys Worldwide Sales Record

Activision says Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has broken the global sales record for a videogame, grossing $775m (£490m) in its first five days on sale.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, released soon after, was close behind. Its publisher said it shipped seven million launch units, worth $450m (£320m).
The strong demand offers some respite to retailers in the gaming sector.
Earlier this week, the UK’s Game Group cuts its revenue forecast and said sales were down 8.6% on 2010.
Modern Warfare 3 beat last year’s release COD: Black Ops, which grossed $650m (£412m) worldwide over its first five days. Modern Warfare 2 earned $550m (£350m) over a similar period the previous year.
Economy
Modern Warfare 3 is the first title in two years to be developed by Infinity Ward, the creator of the Call of Duty series.
It follows on from events in Modern Warfare 2. Players take on the role of special forces resisting a Russian invasion of the United States and Europe.

New Xbox Comes With Cloud Features
At its next-generation consoles, Microsoft plans to focus on cloud features and it is based on the gaming trend of OnLive and Gaikai.
Cloud technology will play an important role in the future development of the Xbox 360′s successor. The Microsoft technology expert Brian Prince confirmed at the weekend as part of GDC China. Prince sees the long-term future of video games in the cloud-gaming sector. All this features are also on the new Microsoft’s Xbox platform in development. Mr. Prince confirmed to the industry magazine Gamasutra, the Redmond company is already working on the integration of cloud features. To pump more details from Prince was not possible.
